Trump Unveils Gaza Plan; Netanyahu Accepts Framework
President Trump unveiled a 20-point plan promising an immediate ceasefire if both sides agree, the return of all hostages within 72 hours, staged Israeli withdrawals and large prisoner exchanges as part of a reconstruction and security package. The proposal would replace Hamas rule with an international technocratic “Board of Peace” to govern Gaza—Tony Blair is named as a potential member—and calls for U.S.-approved economic redevelopment including a special economic zone and vetted security forces under international oversight. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has accepted the framework, and leaders from countries including India and Russia, as well as some Western ministers, have voiced support while hardline Israeli officials and many Palestinians have objected. Hamas said it would study a written version “in good faith,” and the White House warned Israel could resume operations if Hamas rejects the plan. Analysts, Palestinian advocates and economic experts warn the plan heavily favors Israeli security, offers few concrete guarantees for Palestinian sovereignty or accountability, and that special-zone development will not resolve Gaza’s lack of control over borders, airspace and resources, making long-term statehood unlikely.
