Denver Spends $356 Million on Migrants

Denver has reportedly spent $356 million of taxpayer money on migrants since December 2022, according to a study by the Common Sense Institute (CSI). The city's mayor, Mike Johnston, has faced increasing scrutiny and resistance from residents concerned about the impact on local services, with the costs accounting for approximately 8% of Denver's $4.4 billion budget for 2025. A significant portion of the expenditure, around $228 million, is attributed to the education of over 16,000 migrant children enrolled in local schools. Amidst this financial strain, Johnston has made cuts to municipal services and has publicly rejected Donald Trump's mass deportation plans, stating his willingness to face jail time for opposing such policies. The influx of about 45,000 migrants has placed additional pressure on Denver's healthcare system, leading to an estimated $49 million in uncompensated care. This situation has raised questions about Denver's sanctuary city status and its ability to manage the ongoing migrant crisis.
