Trump Administration Halts Major Offshore Wind Project Rhode Island, Connecticut
The Trump administration has ordered Denmark's Orsted to halt all activities on the Revolution Wind offshore wind project off the coast of Rhode Island, citing national security and environmental concerns. The Bureau of Ocean Energy Management issued the suspension as part of a mandated review of offshore wind projects, emphasizing the need to protect U.S. national security interests and address potential conflicts in maritime zones. This move aligns with President Trump's energy policy to prioritize affordable, reliable, and conventional energy sources over wind projects, which he criticizes as costly, unreliable, and aesthetically displeasing. The Revolution Wind farm, which had completed installation of its first turbine and was anticipated to generate power for 350,000 homes by 2026, was previously approved under the Biden administration's support for renewable energy. The Department of the Interior's action reflects a broader rollback of federal support for green energy initiatives favored by the previous administration, including ending preferential treatment for foreign-controlled energy projects. Orsted has not yet responded to requests for comment amid these developments.
