US, Japan, South Korea Start Freedom Edge Drill

The United States, Japan, and South Korea have commenced a three-day joint military exercise called 'Freedom Edge' in response to recent North Korean missile tests and perceived threats. This trilateral exercise involves state-of-the-art fighter jets, marine patrol aircraft, and the US nuclear-powered aircraft carrier USS George Washington, underscoring the strategic military cooperation between the three nations. The drills include maritime missile and cyber defense training, highlighting the nations' commitment to enhancing regional security amid increasing tensions with North Korea and China's assertiveness. North Korea, which recently tested an intercontinental ballistic missile and engaged in military operations with Russia, has condemned these exercises as provocations. The joint exercises are part of an annual agreement to bolster security cooperation, initially agreed upon in a 2023 summit. Additionally, the US plans to retire its A-10 Thunderbolt II aircraft in South Korea by 2025 as part of a modernization strategy.
