AI-generated messages mimicked Rubio's voice and writing style, with the aim of manipulating officials to access sensitive information or accounts. Officials described the campaign as unsophisticated and ultimately unsuccessful. The incident is currently under investigation by the State Department and the Bureau of Diplomatic Security. In response, the department has issued a broader advisory to embassies and consulates amid growing threats from AI-enabled impersonators.
