20% of U.S. Adults Now Get News From TikTok
A fifth of U.S. adults (20%) now regularly get news on TikTok, up from 3% in 2020, according to a Pew Research Center analysis of more than 5,000 U.S. adults. Growth is strongest among younger adults — 43% of those under 30 and 25% of adults 30–49 now turn to TikTok for news, while adoption is lower among older groups (10% of ages 50–64; 3% 65+). Among TikTok users, 55% say they regularly get news on the platform, the fastest increase in news use of any social platform Pew studied and placing TikTok on par with sites such as X, Facebook and Truth Social. Pew says this shift reflects a broader change in how Americans consume information, with YouTube and Instagram growing as news sources while some platforms such as Reddit have declined. The platform’s rising news role has drawn policy attention, with reports of efforts to keep TikTok operational in the U.S. under U.S. ownership amid national-security concerns.
