TSA to End Routine Shoe Removal at Airports
The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) is phasing out its requirement for most travelers to remove their shoes during airport security screenings, with the policy already in effect at select airports and set to expand nationally. The change, confirmed by internal memos and airport officials but not yet formally announced, is aimed at streamlining the screening process and enhancing passenger experience. While most travelers will now be able to keep their shoes on, footwear removal may still be required for additional screening in specific cases. The updated policy, prompted by advancements in screening technology and revised threat assessments, follows nearly two decades of the rule established after the 2001 'shoe bomber' incident. Official confirmation from the Department of Homeland Security is anticipated soon, and a press conference has been scheduled to provide more details. The shift is part of broader efforts to modernize airport security while maintaining safety standards.
