Senator Cardin Targeted by Deepfake Caller

Senator Benjamin L. Cardin, Chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, was targeted by a sophisticated deepfake impersonation of former Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba. The deepfake caller, who contacted Cardin via email to arrange a Zoom meeting, posed convincing questions about politically sensitive topics, including the use of long-range missiles against Russia. Cardin became suspicious and reported the incident to the State Department, which confirmed the impersonation.
