Southern California Wildfires Declared Historic Disaster
The ongoing wildfires in Southern California have resulted in devastating losses, with powerful Santa Ana winds fueling the flames across Los Angeles and Ventura counties. Over 45 square miles have been scorched, leading to the destruction of more than 1,300 structures and the evacuation of around 179,000 people. Five major blazes, including the Palisades and Eaton Fires, remain largely uncontrolled, causing significant damage and loss of life. The fires have also led to widespread power outages affecting up to 420,000 residents, as firefighting efforts are hampered by extreme weather conditions and resource limitations. The entertainment industry has responded with event postponements and calls to donate funds to affected victims. Governor Gavin Newsom has declared the wildfires a historic disaster, with damages potentially reaching up to $57 billion.
