Democrat Dwight Evans Plans Retirement Ending 45-Year Public Career
U.S. Rep. Dwight Evans, a Democrat representing a heavily Democratic district in Philadelphia, announced he will not seek reelection in 2026, ending a public service career spanning over 45 years. Evans, 71, who suffered a stroke in May 2024 but has since returned to Congress and affirmed his good health, intends to serve out his current term until January 2027. He first won his congressional seat in 2016 after defeating indicted incumbent Chaka Fattah and has been reelected comfortably in a safe Democratic district. Evans has served on the influential House Ways and Means Committee and previously chaired the Pennsylvania House Appropriations Committee. His retirement is expected to trigger a competitive Democratic primary to succeed him, with several potential candidates expressing interest. Throughout his career, Evans has been an advocate for justice, economic opportunity, infrastructure, education, and has been a vocal critic of President Trump’s policies.
