Michelle O'Neill plans to attend Pope Francis's funeral in Rome
Northern Ireland First Minister Michelle O'Neill has cut short a family holiday in hopes of attending the funeral of Pope Francis in Rome, with discussions underway to secure her official invitation. While her attendance has not yet been confirmed, leaders from around the world, including Prime Minister Keir Starmer and Scotland's First Minister John Swinney, are expected to be present at the ceremony. Deputy First Minister Emma Little-Pengelly will not attend, but both she and O'Neill have expressed deep admiration for Pope Francis and condolences to Catholic leaders. In Northern Ireland, tributes continue with special council meetings and a Requiem Mass led by Archbishop Eamon Martin in Armagh to honor the late pontiff. Pope Francis, who died at age 88, was remembered for his compassion, advocacy for peace, and efforts to address global issues. Large crowds of mourners have gathered in Rome and across Ireland to pay their respects.
