USIP Sues Trump over Unlawful Takeover by DOGE
The U.S. Institute of Peace (USIP), a congressionally chartered nonprofit, is suing the Trump administration and Elon Musk's Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) for what it describes as an unlawful takeover of its headquarters. The institute accuses DOGE employees of forcibly entering its Washington, D.C. building, aided by police, to seize infrastructure and sensitive systems. This action follows an executive order issued by Trump aiming to minimize federal agencies, including the USIP. The executive order resulted in the removal of most USIP board members and the firing of its president, George Moose. Despite claims from the Justice Department that the president has authority to make such changes, the institute maintains that its independent status exempts it from executive branch control. The lawsuit seeks to halt the alleged dismantling of the institute and restore its leadership, arguing that the executive actions contravene the organization's congressional mandate.
