CBP Awards $70M Contract for Texas Border Wall
The U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) has awarded a new $70 million contract to Granite Construction Co. for extending the U.S.-Mexico border wall in Hidalgo County, Texas, marking the first contract of President Donald Trump’s second term. This project will add approximately seven miles of new barriers in the Rio Grande Valley Sector to close critical gaps left from previous incomplete sections. The initiative, funded by CBP's Fiscal Year 2021 funds, aligns with executive orders from Trump's administration aimed at securing borders and curbing illegal crossings and smuggling activities. Previously, much of the wall constructed during Trump's first term replaced existing barriers, with only 52 miles of new primary barriers established. The Biden administration initially halted construction but later resumed certain projects due to unallocated congressional funds. The wall continues to be a contentious issue, with ongoing efforts by state and federal authorities to fortify the border.
