US Plans 30+ Offshore Oil, Gas Lease Sales Through 2040
The administration of President Donald Trump has announced a long-term plan for over 30 offshore oil and gas lease sales in the Gulf of Mexico, renamed the Gulf of America, and Alaska's Cook Inlet through 2040, fulfilling the directive of the recently passed One Big Beautiful Bill Act. Interior Secretary Doug Burgum emphasized that this program aims to strengthen American energy dominance, create jobs, and responsibly develop offshore resources, marking a significant shift from the previous administration's reduced leasing efforts. The Gulf of Mexico, a key contributor to U.S. crude oil production and the national economy, will hold two lease sales annually through 2039, starting with the first sale, Big Beautiful Gulf 1, scheduled for December 10, 2025. Alaska's Cook Inlet will host six lease sales through 2032 to support local job growth and investment while maintaining its strategic role in domestic energy supply and Arctic interests. The lease sales schedule is designed to provide clarity and stability to the oil and gas industry, encouraging investment in deep-water infrastructure and reinforcing the U.S. position as a leading global energy supplier. This approach reflects the Trump administration's broader energy agenda focused on economic growth, energy independence, and reducing reliance on foreign imports.
