Trump Admin Uses Federal Lands for Housing Initiative
The Trump administration, through a joint effort by the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) and the Department of the Interior, plans to address the affordable housing shortage by utilizing underused federal lands. HUD Secretary Scott Turner and Interior Secretary Doug Burgum announced the creation of a task force to identify suitable federal lands for residential development, aiming to streamline the regulatory process by reducing bureaucratic hurdles like environmental reviews and transfer protocols. This initiative involves transferring or leasing federal properties to states or localities to support infrastructure and ensure affordability remains central. Despite concerns about potential environmental impacts, the secretaries emphasize responsible resource usage and strategic development. Approximately one-third of U.S. land is federally owned, but only 7.3% is within metropolitan areas with significant housing shortages. This plan comes amid heightened voter concern over housing prices, with 69% of voters expressing serious worry according to a Pew Research survey.
