Trump, Putin Launch Ukraine Ceasefire Negotiations
US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin held a two-hour phone call described by both as constructive and productive, focusing on ending the war in Ukraine. Trump announced that Russia and Ukraine will immediately begin negotiations toward a ceasefire, with terms to be determined by the two countries. Putin confirmed Russia's willingness to work on a memorandum for a future peace agreement and said a ceasefire is possible if agreements are reached. Trump suggested the Vatican as a possible venue for peace talks and highlighted the potential for significant postwar trade. European leaders expressed cautious support but remain skeptical about Russia’s intentions and the security guarantees provided to Ukraine. While no immediate breakthrough occurred, direct dialogue has resumed and further talks with Ukrainian President Zelensky and NATO leaders are planned.
