Retired Dallas Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson Dies at 88

Retired US Representative Eddie Bernice Johnson died at the age of 88. She had retired earlier this year as the eldest member of the House at 88. During her nearly 30 years of service, Johnson was a trailblazer in Texas politics, becoming the first Black woman elected to public office in Dallas, the first woman to lead the Texas House Labor Committee, the first Black woman to serve as a regional director for the Department of Health, Education and Welfare, and the first registered nurse elected to the U.S. Congress. She made a significant impact on infrastructure funding in Dallas, earning praise from figures such as President Biden and Dallas Mayor Eric Johnson.
