Senate GOP Plans Nuclear Option To Break Democrat Block On Trump Nominees
Senate Republicans, led by Majority Leader John Thune, are preparing to invoke the "nuclear option" to overcome what they describe as unprecedented obstruction by Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and Democrats blocking President Donald Trump's nominees. This historic rules change would allow for en bloc confirmation of more than 100 lower-level executive branch nominees who have been stalled for seven months, enabling a swift vote before the Senate recess on September 19. The obstruction marks the first time since the Hoover administration that a president has had no civilian nominees confirmed via voice vote or unanimous consent at this stage in his term. Thune's working group, formed after failed negotiations with Democrats, is pursuing a more expansive version of a 2023 proposal by Democrat Sen. Amy Klobuchar, which originally allowed confirming up to ten nominees at once. Thune has warned since July that Republicans would change Senate rules if Democrats did not expedite confirmations, citing the need to staff the administration and focus on legislative priorities. This move aims to break the prolonged stalemate and ensure President Trump's administration is fully staffed.
