FBI Agent Buma Arrested in Classified Info Case

Johnathan Buma, a 15-year FBI veteran and counterintelligence specialist, was arrested and charged with the unauthorized disclosure of confidential FBI documents as he attempted to leave the country from JFK Airport. Buma allegedly printed around 130 files from the FBI's internal network in October 2023, which included sensitive details about investigations and informants, and shared them as part of a draft for a tell-all book about his career. The draft reportedly contained information about the FBI's investigations into a foreign nation's weapons of mass destruction program. Buma, who has been critical of the FBI's handling of certain cases, particularly those involving Trump administration figures, had previously testified before Congress and claimed whistleblower status. He was released on a $100,000 bond and the case has been transferred to California where he is based. His arrest highlights ongoing tensions within the FBI regarding political bias and the handling of classified information.
