Air India Dreamliner Crash Kills 241, Many Hurt
Air India Flight AI-171, a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner, crashed into the residential quarters of a medical college near Ahmedabad shortly after takeoff for London Gatwick on June 12, 2025, killing 241 of the 242 people on board and causing additional fatalities on the ground. The sole survivor, British national Vishwash Kumar Ramesh, was seated near an exit in a structurally strong part of the plane. The disaster is the world’s deadliest aviation accident in a decade and the first fatal crash involving the Dreamliner series. Rescue operations were extensive, with authorities recovering key digital evidence to aid the ongoing investigation, while the cause of the crash remains undetermined. The tragedy has drawn widespread condolences from leaders such as Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Google CEO Sundar Pichai, and has highlighted both the bravery of first responders and the profound grief of affected families. The loss has had a significant impact across India and internationally, particularly among passengers from Maharashtra.
