Guatemalan Indicted for Brooklyn Subway Arson
Sebastian Zapeta-Calil, a 33-year-old Guatemalan citizen, has been indicted on charges of first-degree murder and arson after allegedly setting a woman on fire aboard a Brooklyn subway train on December 22. The victim, who remains unidentified, died from thermal injuries and smoke inhalation. Zapeta-Calil, who has a history of heavy drinking and K2 use, reportedly fanned the flames with a shirt and calmly watched the woman burn. He was identified through surveillance footage and detained by police, who found a lighter in his possession. Despite claiming intoxication and memory lapse, Zapeta-Calil identified himself in the video footage. The attack has heightened existing safety concerns in New York City's mass transit system.
