Miami Man Sentenced for Capitol Riot Role

Gabriel Augustin Garcia, a 43-year-old Miami man and member of the Proud Boys, was sentenced to 12 months in prison for his involvement in the January 6, 2021 Capitol riot. U.S. District Judge Amy Berman Jackson also ordered him to serve 24 months of supervised release and pay $2,000 in restitution. Garcia was convicted of obstruction of law enforcement during a civil disorder and obstruction of an official proceeding, having actively participated in aggressive confrontations with police and recorded himself inside the Capitol. Prosecutors highlighted his role in planning violence through Telegram groups and his taunting of law enforcement during the riot. Garcia's actions contributed to the disruption of Congress's certification of the 2020 presidential election results, joining a mob that unlawfully entered the Capitol. His case reflects broader legal actions against members of the Proud Boys, including their former leader Enrique Tarrio, who received a 22-year sentence for related charges.
