US Outlays for Israel Reach $31–34 Billion
Twin reports from the Costs of War Project at Brown University find the United States provided at least $21.7 billion in military assistance to Israel since the Oct. 7, 2023 attacks and spent an additional roughly $9.65–$12.07 billion on related operations across the Middle East, bringing total U.S. outlays tied to the Gaza war and its regional spillover to about $31–34 billion. The studies say $17.9 billion was delivered in the war’s first year and $3.8 billion in the second, with some assistance still pending and tens of billions more projected under existing bilateral agreements. Authors and analysts say U.S. weapons, financing and diplomatic backing have been indispensable to Israel’s sustained campaigns in Gaza and the wider region, enabling strikes and operations in Gaza, Lebanon, Syria, Iran and Yemen. The reports, released on the two‑year anniversary of the Oct. 7 attacks and based largely on open‑source congressional notifications, also highlight the human cost—Al Jazeera cited at least 67,160 killed and 169,679 wounded in Gaza since October 2023—and document broader regional casualties. The findings prompted no immediate State Department comment and came as indirect Israeli‑Hamas talks continue and political pressure mounts in Washington to end the fighting.
