Justice Department Report Criticizes Worcester Police

The U.S. Department of Justice's two-year investigation into the Worcester Police Department revealed a pattern of excessive force and inappropriate sexual conduct with women during undercover operations. The 41-page report found credible allegations of sexual assault and misconduct by officers, particularly towards women suspected of engaging in prostitution, and highlighted discriminatory practices affecting Black and Hispanic individuals. It criticized the department's inadequate policies and training, which contributed to these unlawful behaviors. U.S. Attorney Joshua Levy emphasized the need for accountability and reform, while legal representatives for Worcester labeled the findings as biased and unfair. The DOJ has provided 19 recommendations for the city to implement in order to address these issues. This investigation is part of a broader trend under the Biden administration to scrutinize police practices that violate civil rights.
