Appeals Court Allows Trump Administration To Cut Medicaid Funding To Planned Parenthood, Impacting 1.1 Million Patients
The 1st Circuit Court of Appeals has ruled in favor of the Trump administration, allowing the enforcement of a provision in the One Big Beautiful Bill Act that blocks Medicaid funding to Planned Parenthood due to its abortion services. This ruling overturns lower court injunctions and will cut off taxpayer money to the organization, which currently receives hundreds of millions annually. Planned Parenthood warns that the funding cut threatens nearly 200 of its 600 health centers, primarily in states where abortion is legal, potentially closing these clinics and impacting over 1.1 million patients who rely on Medicaid for reproductive health care, including STI testing, cancer screenings, and birth control. The organization is considering waivers for affiliates to opt out of abortion services to maintain funding. Pro-life advocates celebrate the decision as a victory to stop taxpayer support for abortion, while Planned Parenthood and supporters argue it will disproportionately harm low-income, Black, brown, and rural communities by reducing access to essential health care. The funding cut is set to take effect on October 1, as litigation continues.
