The Guardian has announced it will cease posting from its official accounts on Elon Musk's social media platform X, citing the spread of 'disturbing content,' including far-right conspiracy theories and racism. This decision follows the recent US presidential election, which the Guardian claims highlighted X as a 'toxic media platform' under Musk's influence. Despite this move, individual reporters for The Guardian can still use X for newsgathering, and users can share its articles. The Guardian, which has around 27 million followers on X, stated that its resources would be better spent promoting journalism elsewhere. The outlet is not the first to leave X; NPR also exited the platform after it was labeled 'state-affiliated media'. Musk, a prominent supporter of Donald Trump during the election, acquired X (formerly Twitter) in 2022 for $44 billion.
