Cameroon Records 81 Presidential Candidates for October Election
A record 81 candidates have applied to run in Cameroon's presidential election scheduled for October 12, 2025, a significant increase from the 28 candidates in 2018. The list includes incumbent President Paul Biya, 92 years old and seeking an eighth term, opposition leaders Maurice Kamto and Joshua Osih, several former ministers, and a majority of male candidates with only seven women among the hopefuls. Biya, the world's oldest head of state, remains the favorite despite concerns over his health and the country's desire for political change, with the opposition lacking unity. Many candidates are seasoned veterans or former officeholders, while others are relatively unknown individuals with slim chances of eligibility. Analysts express doubts about the democratic nature of the elections, especially given Biya's recent military reshuffle to secure army support for his campaign. The official list of qualified candidates will be published 60 days before the election after review by the electoral body Elecam.
