States Sue Trump Over $1 Billion Education Fund Cuts

A coalition of 16 states, led by Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro and New York Attorney General Letitia James, has filed a lawsuit against the Trump administration for revoking over $1 billion in COVID-related education funding, initially approved under the American Rescue Plan Act. The lawsuit argues that the abrupt funding cut violates the Administrative Procedures Act, as the U.S. Department of Education had previously granted extensions until March 2026. Governor Shapiro emphasized that these funds were crucial for student opportunities and safety, accusing the administration of reneging on federal commitments. California Attorney General Rob Bonta, also part of the lawsuit, criticized the decision, highlighting its adverse impact on post-pandemic educational recovery. The states argue that the rescission of funds could significantly hinder educational support for low-income and unhoused students.
