Taiwan supports TSMC's $100 billion US expansion plans
Taiwan's government has expressed support for Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company's (TSMC) $100 billion investment in the U.S. while ensuring that its most advanced semiconductor technologies remain on the island. Presidential office spokesperson Karen Kuo stated that TSMC will retain its cutting-edge manufacturing processes in Taiwan to maintain the island's competitive edge. The deal, announced during a meeting between TSMC's CEO and former President Donald Trump, aims to bolster U.S. semiconductor production amid national security concerns. Taiwan's Economics Minister Kuo Jyh-huei reassured that TSMC's global expansion, including facilities in the U.S., would not diminish Taiwan's significance in the semiconductor industry. Premier Cho Jung-tai highlighted that the investment would strengthen Taiwan's global market position. Concerns about TSMC becoming 'Americanized' were deemed exaggerated by Taiwanese officials, who emphasized the importance of maintaining a strong domestic semiconductor industry.
