Taliban releases American prisoner George Glezmann after two years
George Glezmann, an American airline mechanic detained by the Taliban since December 2022, has been released, as announced by Secretary of State Marco Rubio. Glezmann's release was facilitated by diplomatic efforts from Qatar and was described as a goodwill gesture rather than a prisoner swap. This marks the third release of an American detainee by the Taliban since January, pointing to efforts to normalize U.S.-Afghanistan relations post-U.S. withdrawal in 2021. Despite this release, Rubio emphasized that other Americans remain detained in Afghanistan. The Taliban's actions are seen as an attempt to gain international recognition and alleviate economic hardships. The U.S. continues to engage with Afghanistan on limited objectives, withholding full recognition due to the regime's repressive policies.
