State Dept Disinformation Hub Closed, Investigation Launched

Secretary of State Marco Rubio has closed the State Department’s disinformation office, most recently called R/FIMI and previously known as the Global Engagement Center (GEC), citing concerns over alleged censorship of Americans and high taxpayer costs. Rubio has also launched an investigation into government-sponsored censorship and deplatforming of U.S. citizens. The closure, celebrated by conservative critics, follows broader Trump administration efforts to dismantle what it labels the 'censorship-industrial complex.' The office previously tracked foreign disinformation from countries like Russia, China, and Iran. Critics, including former State Department officials, warn this move could undermine efforts to counter foreign propaganda and harm U.S. information security. The State Department now lacks a dedicated resource for monitoring and responding to foreign disinformation campaigns.
