Trump Attacks Mamdani as He Leads NYC Vote
More than 735,000 New Yorkers cast ballots during nine days of early voting, with turnout projected to reach as many as 1.5–2 million ahead of the Nov. 4 mayoral election. Democratic Socialist Zohran Mamdani, in his early 30s and born in Uganda to filmmaker Mira Nair, has emerged as the frontrunner and could become New York City’s first Indian‑American and Muslim mayor, leading polls by roughly 7–10 points. His campaign centers on affordability and expanded public services — including rent freezes, large publicly owned housing expansions, free bus service and universal early childcare — built on grassroots organizing and youth outreach. The race is a three‑way contest with former Gov. Andrew Cuomo running as an independent and Republican Curtis Sliwa on the ballot, and turnout among older and Black voters could determine the outcome. Mamdani faces scrutiny over past comments, pro‑Palestinian activism and a campaign photo with an imam prosecutors linked to the 1993 World Trade Center bombing, and opponents have seized on his policing remarks amid accusations of Islamophobia. National Democrats have been cautious — some progressives campaigned for him and former President Barack Obama privately praised him — while President Trump has publicly assailed Mamdani on Truth Social and warned he could withhold federal funds if Mamdani wins.
