Michigan Law Empowers Pharmacists to Prescribe Birth Control

Governor Gretchen Whitmer has enacted legislation allowing pharmacists in Michigan to prescribe and dispense contraceptives directly, aimed at improving access to reproductive health care amidst a shortage of OB/GYNs in the state. This new law, effective 90 days after signing, is expected to reduce unnecessary barriers for residents seeking birth control, as noted by Whitmer and the Michigan Pharmacists Association. Additionally, the Take Control of Your Birth Control program continues to distribute free contraception supplies, including emergency contraceptives and condoms, across more than 300 locations statewide, benefiting an estimated 25,000 individuals. Whitmer emphasized the initiative's role in empowering Michiganders to make informed family planning decisions and reducing unintended pregnancies. The legislation and programs received bipartisan support, reflecting a commitment to improving reproductive health access despite some GOP opposition. With these changes, Michigan joins over 30 other states that have implemented similar measures.
