Hungary Delays Decision on EU Sanctions Against Russia

Hungary's EU Affairs Minister János Bóka has stated that the country is undecided on whether to support the extension of European Union sanctions against Russia, which are due for renewal at the end of the month. He emphasized the need to consult with the incoming U.S. administration before making a decision, suggesting that Hungary seeks clarity on the future sanctions regime from the Trump administration. Bóka noted that the sanctions involve various economic sectors and the freezing of Russian central bank assets, and any renewal requires unanimous consent from all 27 EU member states. Hungary has historically maintained closer ties with Moscow compared to other EU nations, which adds complexity to its position on the sanctions. The EU has already approved 15 sanctions packages since Russia's invasion of Ukraine and is preparing a 16th. As Hungary awaits U.S. input, its delay in decision-making reflects a broader strategy of transatlantic cooperation on international policy matters.
