China Expands Visa-Free Travel, Boosting Tourism

During his inaugural visit to China, Japanese Foreign Minister Takeshi Iwaya and Chinese officials agreed to enhance exchanges and restart security and diplomatic dialogues, following a recent meeting between Japanese Prime Minister and Chinese President. The discussions also addressed Japanese beef and rice imports, reflecting a mutual interest in building stable ties amidst concerns over U.S. foreign policy under a potential Trump administration. Concurrently, China's new visa-free transit policy, effective December 17, significantly increases permitted stays for foreign travelers from 72 to 240 hours, sparking a surge in tourism and travel interest. The policy expansion includes more eligible countries and designated ports, with travelers now able to explore lesser-known cities, enhancing cultural experiences. Additionally, plans for increased stay limits on group tourist visas and a new long-term visa for high-income individuals are in the pipeline. These developments are expected to foster better relations between Japan and China while boosting China's tourism sector.
