Bangladesh, Nepal Leaders Address Democracy Challenges

Economist Rehman Sobhan has criticized the dynastic leadership and increasing political violence in Bangladesh, asserting that these issues are undermining democracy. Speaking at the 8th SANEM Annual Economists' Conference, he emphasized that the concentration of power within a few families stifles internal democratic processes and leads to a culture where politicians prioritize financial gain over public service. Sobhan also highlighted the intertwining of politics with business interests as a significant challenge, creating a 'winner-takes-all' mentality. Meanwhile, Nepal's Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak reaffirmed the necessity of democracy, arguing for improved democratic practices and constitutional safeguards to prevent crises. He emphasized that unity is crucial in safeguarding democracy and protecting the constitution. Both discussions reflect a broader concern regarding the integrity and sustainability of democratic systems in their respective countries.
