Kamala Harris has officially become the Democratic presidential nominee, marking the first time a woman of color has led a major-party ticket in U.S. history. With Harris as the presidential nominee and Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz as her running mate, Lt. Gov. Peggy Flanagan could become the first Indigenous female governor in U.S. history. Flanagan, a member of the White Earth Band of Ojibwe, has been an advocate for Indigenous rights and has served as the highest-ranking Native woman elected to executive office. Her legislative achievements include the establishment of the Missing and Murdered Indigenous Relatives Office and a landmark Indigenous sovereignty bill.
