Mexico Dissolves Migrant Caravans Amid Tariff Threats
In response to President-elect Donald Trump's threats of imposing a 25% tariff on Mexican imports unless migration through Mexico is curtailed, Mexican authorities have dissolved two migrant caravans. These caravans, originating from the city of Tapachula, consisted of around 4,000 people at their peak. Migrants were either offered bus transportation to other parts of Mexico or provided with transit visas for temporary travel within the country. Despite Trump's claims that Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum agreed to halt migration entirely, she clarified that Mexico aims to manage, not stop, migration flows. This development comes as a new caravan of approximately 2,000 migrants has set out from Tapachula, aiming to reach the U.S. border before Trump's inauguration. Rights activists have expressed concern over the INM's promises and the migrants' possible exploitation during transit.
