In anticipation of potential unrest surrounding the presidential election and the upcoming inauguration, over two dozen states have expressed readiness to deploy National Guard troops to Washington, D.C. Although the District of Columbia has yet to formally request aid, officials are preparing for possible violence similar to the January 6, 2021, Capitol riot. Approximately 25,000 Guard members were mobilized during that incident, and similar security measures may be implemented again. Colonel Jean Paul Laurenceau from the National Guard Bureau indicated that the number of troops required will depend on D.C.'s needs and intelligence assessments of possible threats. Concerns are heightened by former President Trump's unsubstantiated claims of election fraud, which he has repeatedly voiced at rallies. The National Guard is also currently active in various states to counter cyber threats during the election period.
