Biden Administration Proposes New Student Loan Forgiveness Rule

With President Joe Biden's term nearing its end, his administration is pushing for new student loan forgiveness measures to assist borrowers facing financial hardships, potentially impacting between 2.67 million and 8 million individuals. The proposed rule, introduced on October 31, 2024, employs predictive analytics to assess borrowers' financial situations and aims to expedite the forgiveness process. U.S. Secretary of Education Miguel Cardona emphasized the need for such measures, highlighting the challenges borrowers have faced in accessing relief. Since taking office, the Biden administration has canceled approximately $175 billion in federal student loans for around 5 million borrowers, although previous attempts at broader debt cancellation have faced legal challenges. The initiative also revives older income-driven repayment options, allowing borrowers to work toward forgiveness over a 20- to 25-year period.
