Panos Anastasiou, a 76-year-old man from Alaska, has been arrested and charged with making over 465 violent threats against six U.S. Supreme Court justices and their families. The threats, which included racist, homophobic, and violent rhetoric, were sent through the Supreme Court's public website from March to July 2023. Anastasiou faces 22 federal charges, including nine counts of making threats against a federal judge and 13 counts of making threats in interstate commerce. The Department of Justice has emphasized the severity of these threats as an attack on judicial independence and the safety of public officials. Attorney General Merrick Garland highlighted the broader increase in threats against federal judges, referencing a previous incident involving an attempted assassination of Justice Brett Kavanaugh. Anastasiou has pleaded not guilty and remains in custody pending further legal proceedings.
