The U.S. Department of Justice has expanded its indictment of five Russian military intelligence officers and one civilian for orchestrating the WhisperGate cyberattacks, which targeted Ukrainian civilian infrastructure and computer systems of 26 NATO countries, including the U.S., ahead of Russia's 2022 invasion of Ukraine. The attacks aimed to demoralize Ukrainians by destroying data and leaking sensitive information. Federal prosecutors allege the hackers used ransomware-like malware to disrupt critical infrastructure and sell stolen data. The Justice Department has reinforced its commitment to disrupting such malicious cyber activities and holding perpetrators accountable. In addition to cyberattacks, the U.S. has seized Russian-controlled internet domains and sanctioned individuals and entities spreading propaganda. Rewards totaling $60 million are offered for information leading to the capture of the indicted individuals.
