Jan. 6 Officers Sue to Enforce Capitol Riot Memorial Installation
Two police officers who defended the U.S. Capitol during the January 6, 2021 riot have filed a lawsuit seeking to compel the installation of a memorial plaque mandated by a 2022 law. Despite the plaque being completed, its installation has been delayed for over two years, with the Architect of the Capitol citing a lack of authorization from House Speaker Mike Johnson, who is responsible for modifications on the House side of the Capitol. The officers argue that this delay reflects political efforts, particularly by President Donald Trump and his congressional allies, to minimize and rewrite the history of the January 6 attack, especially since Trump pardoned hundreds of rioters accused of crimes related to the event. The lawsuit highlights the injuries and ongoing trauma suffered by the officers, including physical harm and psychological effects, which have been compounded by government inaction and public harassment. The officers contend that the failure to honor their service undermines recognition of the violence of that day and violates their constitutional rights. Speaker Johnson has not publicly explained the delay, and the Architect of the Capitol awaits his instructions to proceed with the plaque's installation.
