Trump Reopens Texas Migrant Detention Center

The South Texas Family Residential Center in Dilley, a privately-run detention facility for immigrant families, will reopen under the Trump administration following its closure in 2024 during the Biden administration. CoreCivic, the company managing the facility, has reached a new agreement with ICE and the city of Dilley to operate the center until at least March 2030. Initially used during the Obama and Trump administrations, the facility was closed after Biden phased out family detention in 2021, opting for alternatives like remote tracking technology. Despite previous criticisms regarding family separations and substandard care, the reopening aligns with Trump's stricter immigration policies, which aim to increase deportations and utilize more detention space. CoreCivic anticipates housing families again, and the move has reignited debates about the treatment and detention of immigrant families. The facility's annual revenue is projected to be $180 million, including medical services.
