US Implements 'Self-Deportation' Feature in Immigration App
The Trump administration has launched the CBP Home app, transforming the previously used CBP One application from an asylum scheduling tool to a platform for 'self-deportation' for undocumented immigrants. Acting CBP Commissioner Pete Flores stated that the app provides a straightforward way for individuals to declare their intent to leave the U.S. voluntarily, which Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem emphasized could allow them the opportunity to return legally in the future. This initiative is part of a broader campaign titled 'Stay Out and Leave Now,' aimed at encouraging undocumented immigrants to depart before facing harsher consequences. Critics have raised concerns that this approach undermines asylum access rights and leaves many vulnerable individuals stranded, as the previous CBP One app facilitated asylum requests before being dismantled. The app's launch coincides with a significant decrease in illegal crossings at the U.S.-Mexico border, which fell more than 80% in 2024. The new app reflects a significant shift in U.S. immigration policy, aligning with Trump's tough stance on illegal immigration.
