Biden Seeks $4B for Disaster, Bridge Relief
The Biden administration has requested $4 billion in emergency funding from Congress, with $3.1 billion specifically allocated for rebuilding the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore, which collapsed in March after being struck by a cargo ship. This funding also addresses disaster relief for recent events such as the Maui wildfires and tornadoes in the Midwest. The administration had previously sought funds as part of a $106 billion package introduced in October 2023, but Congress has yet to act on many of those requests. The letter from Shalanda Young, the director of the Office of Management and Budget, emphasizes the urgency of the funding to ensure the federal government can meet its disaster response responsibilities. Additionally, the request includes $80 million for the Coast Guard and $33 million for the Army Corps of Engineers for their roles in addressing the bridge collapse. The administration's appeal comes amid projections of an extraordinary hurricane season by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).
