Election Officials Warn of Eroding Confidence

This erosion of trust is attributed, in part, to former President Donald Trump's repeated claims of election fraud, which resonate particularly with his supporters. Meanwhile, New Mexico Secretary of State Maggie Toulouse Oliver testified before Congress about the detrimental impact of misinformation on public confidence in elections, highlighting increased threats against election workers. Toulouse Oliver emphasized that false narratives around issues like noncitizen voting are unfounded and contribute to a cycle of distrust and violence. Both she and Michigan Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson warned that without addressing these issues, the integrity of the electoral process is compromised. Congressional Republicans are pushing for legislation requiring proof of citizenship for voter registration, further complicating the confidence crisis in electoral systems.
