DHS Ends Temporary Protected Status for 75,000 Hondurans, Nicaraguans
President Donald Trump's Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has announced the termination of Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for approximately 75,000 migrants from Honduras and Nicaragua, citing improved conditions in those countries since the natural disasters that originally prompted TPS designations over 25 years ago. DHS Secretary Kristi Noem emphasized that TPS was intended to be temporary, noting that Honduras and Nicaragua have recovered sufficiently to make it safe for their citizens to return. Migrants affected by the change are being encouraged to use the CBP Home mobile app to receive assistance, including a free plane ticket and a $1,000 exit bonus. The move aligns with the administration's broader effort to strengthen immigration enforcement and restore the intended temporary nature of TPS, which has often been extended by successive administrations and transformed into a de facto amnesty program. While the decision has faced legal challenges in other cases, the Supreme Court has upheld the administration's authority to end TPS for certain countries, such as Venezuela. This action will lead to the loss of work permits and deportation protections for these migrants unless they qualify for other legal statuses in the U.S.
