Moldova Declares State of Emergency Amid Energy Crisis

Moldova has declared a state of emergency due to an impending energy crisis linked to the expiration of its gas transit agreement with Russia, effective January 1, 2025. President Maia Sandu accused Gazprom of intentionally provoking this crisis by refusing to supply gas through alternative routes, which is critical for the Transnistrian region that relies on Russian gas to power its electricity generation. Moldova's government is in talks with Romania and other European partners to secure alternative energy supplies, as the Cuciurgan MGRES plant in Transnistria generates about 75% of Moldova's electricity. Meanwhile, Transnistria has requested assistance from Moscow, emphasizing the need for continued gas supplies to avoid severe economic repercussions. Romania has pledged support to Moldova during this critical period, focusing on electricity and natural gas provision. The situation poses risks of widespread blackouts and economic instability for both Moldova and Transnistria, potentially leading to a humanitarian crisis.
