Federal Judge Orders Dismantling Alligator Alcatraz Immigration Detention Site
U.S. District Judge Kathleen M. Williams ruled that the Alligator Alcatraz immigration detention center in the Florida Everglades must stop accepting new detainees and begin dismantling operations within 60 days due to violations of environmental laws. The judge found that the government failed to conduct the required environmental review before constructing the facility, which threatens protected wetlands, endangered species, and local communities reliant on the Everglades. The ruling came after a lawsuit by the Miccosukee Tribe and environmental groups, who argued the project endangered the ecologically sensitive Everglades and violated the National Environmental Policy Act. Despite strong support from President Trump and Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, who touted the facility as central to their immigration enforcement strategy, the court ordered removal of fencing, lighting, generators, and other infrastructure. State officials have indicated plans to appeal, with DeSantis's office affirming deportations will continue, while environmental advocates hailed the ruling as a significant victory for conservation. This decision highlights ongoing tensions between immigration enforcement policies and environmental protections under the current administration.
